Summary: When Lacus finds a stray kitten, Kira finds it hard to say 'no' to her.
"Bull's eye!" the kid shouted as he struck the kitten with an old crumpled soda can.
The poor creature let out a pitiful 'mew', and Lacus was at it's side in the blink of an eye. "What in the world are you doing?!" she exclaimed, cradling the scraggly thing in her arms.
Ashamed at being caught, the boy backed up...right into Kira. He grabbed the kid by the shoulder and spun him around. "Do you think it's funny hurting helpless creatures?!" His violet eyes were full of anger.
"I...n-no..." he stuttered, before shaking Kira's hand off him and running off. Kira was about to go after him when Lacus called him over.
"The poor thing's hurt," she said, voice sorrowful and on the verge of tears. "We have to take him home with us."
Kira strided over to her, helping her to her feet. What that little boy had done sickened him--somehow, it brought back memories of civlians being killed in the war. To him there was no difference. They had been helpless, just as the kitten had been.
The thing was ugly. Well, Lacus didn't think so, but she thought pretty much everything was "cute!", so that didn't count. It had patches of fur missing, twisted whiskers and was a charcoal grey color with odd splotches of white here and there.
"Kira, is the milk cool enough yet?" she called.
With a sigh he poked his finger in the small saucer. It felt luke-warm to him, so he brought it out to her. "It's just right, I believe."
She grinned. "Alright, I'm trusting you." Lacus finally released the little bundle from it's fuzzy blanket prison, and he waddled across the floor where they both knelt towards the milk.
"Isn't he just precious?" she cooed, unable to stop fussing over him. "I don't know what to name him, though...what do you think Kira?"
"We're naming him?" he asked, looking unsure. "Don't you think we should leave that up to whoever's going to adopt him?"
Lacus looked at him, as if he were a little slow. "No one's adopting him. We're keeping him."
"But Lacus...I really don't like cats," he said, already feeling defeated.
She scooped the kitten up in her arms, who protested, obviously not done drinking yet. "We can't do that to him! He's already attached. Besides..."
The look was coming. He knew it.
"...I really like him. Please, Kira?" And those blue eyes of hers widened innocently, looking at him sadly as the kitten squirmed in her arms.
Kira sighed, face in his palm. "Alright. But he's not sleeping on the bed with us!!"
"Yay! Did you hear that, Fluffy-chan? You get to stay!" She nuzzled the fuzzy critter. And as Kira stood to fetch more milk, she whispered in the kitten's ear "don't worry; I always go to bed first. And Kira secretly likes cute things."
Kira watched her from the doorway. A smile found it's way onto his lips, and his heart warmed. When Lacus set her mind on something, she always achieved her goal.
Suddenly he felt like the kitten, reluctant at first to receive her affection, but finding that it was the very thing it had been yearning for. He shook his head and continued on toward the stove.
